Our next stop on Coffee Shop Monday’s is a lovely little place in South Saint Louis City: Sump Coffee.

Walking in, the scene in front of you is very hip. Young people working away on laptops on wooden tables, very helpful staff and of course the strong smell of coffee. Exposed brick walls and unique paintings frame the whole place. What I also noticed was the sense of community. Everyone greeted one another as old friends, as if they’ve been going to this place for years.

Where I was sitting, right behind me they were producing, packing, and sending off their own brand of coffee, right in store. Hearing the crinkle of paper bags and rustle of coffee beans really made the atmosphere.

The menu is unique, changing by each season. Different drinks from different countries also were on the menu. Coffee from Ecuador, Colombia, El Salvador, even Ethiopia. If you’re afraid to try coffee from different countries, unsure of what kind of flavors each country brings to the table, right below they described the notes that you’ll taste while trying their coffee. For example, Colombia’s has hints of “walnut, cola, butter, and honey”.

Not a big coffee drinker (like my boyfriend)? They also had various selections of teas to try as well. But you’re better off walking into here with coffee on the mind.

When I asked the barista what their recommendation was, they told me that’s like asking what’s the best kind of red wine, you just can’t do that, there’s too many options.

I ordered myself one of their special summer drinks, an espresso with orange bitters and fever tree tonic called the “Espresso Tonic”. The first sip drove my taste buds wild. You’re greeted with the fresh taste of citrus but a few seconds after the kick of espresso enters the picture. One of the most unique tasting summer coffees I’ve ever had. My boyfriend’s face actually twisted up trying this special summer brew, it’s definitely not for the novice coffee drinker.

This coffee shop experience has been unique. From the changing and international menu, the friendly welcoming atmosphere, and the stylish and hip interior, this is a definite must visit if you’re ever passing through the Saint Louis area.
